Program Description

The three-year ACGME approved fellowship program in Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility at the University of Pennsylvania is designed for candidates who project for themselves a career in academic Obstetrics and Gynecology. There is a significant research emphasis and at least 18 months are set aside for research, free of clinical responsibilities. The remainder of the time is used for training in the clinical discipline of Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility

Clinical Care

Established in 1965, the Division of Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility at the University of Pennsylvania is a high volume program (2200-2400 new patients per year) including reproductive surgery, assisted reproductive technologies, the treatment of hypothalamic-pituitary-ovarian dysfunction, and family planning. The Division has a faculty of fourteen full-time REI attendings, 11 of whom have subspecialty certification in Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility, one is Board eligible, one is Board Certified in Urology and one is a PhD scientist with HCLD certification. These attendings form the core for the teaching and training of fellows, residents and students in Reproductive Medicine. In addition, through the Endocrine Sections of the Departments of Medicine and Pediatrics, supplemental clinical experience is available in adult as well as pediatric endocrinology. Within our department there is also training available in Reproductive Genetics as well as Male Infertility. Additional time in these areas is provided during elective rotations, though all fellows are encouraged to participate.

Research

For the research component of their fellowship, fellows pursue one of two formal fellowship tracks  (which may also be funded by NIH T32 training grants):

  • Physician-Scientist Track: This track includes at least 18 months of bench research training. This may include a masters degree in Translational Research (MSTR).
  • Clinician-Investigator Track: This track includes formal clinical and research training through formal course work leading to a Master of Science degree in Clinical Epidemiology (MSCE).
